The Irresistible Death Club

In “The Irresistible Death Club,” four fabulous, deceased female icons and artists take a trip back to earth with their travel club. The spirits of singer Maria Callas, writer Zora Neale Hurston, artist Frida Kahlo and playwright Lillian Hellman travel to mystical Machu Picchu for what seems to be an other-worldly, sight-seeing tour. Along the arduous trek to the mountain top, they encounter a recently deceased soul who they must help complete the journey on earth. Machu Picchu becomes a stop along the way, a place of agony, loss, and ultimately freedom and ascension for them all.

Commissioned by For Colored Girls Productions, “The Princess of 57th Street,” is a family musical that reinvents the classic Cinderella story. A young girl from economically depressed Philadelphia, dreams of being a modern princess influenced by images of pop culture royalty. Her dreams come to life when she discovers that she is descended from true African nobility. Journeying to Africa and experiencing the life of a true princess, her life is enriched in ways she could never imagine. With seventeen original songs, co-written with composer, Kurt Farquhar, the coming of age musical goes on a young girl’s journey to Africa and back, and reveals her connection to all of humanity.

He closes up the clock shop he’s run in the Bronx for over fifty years, retires to the City and moves in with his son and his overactive family in their apartment on Riverside Drive. Vannie’s still working to support her grown up daughter, and her wild teenage granddaughter, by serving as a nurse/companion for a sweet spirited octogenarian in the same Riverside Drive apartment. Abe and Vannie’s paths cross one day on a park bench, sparks fly, and love’s in the air, but their well intentioned off-spring don’t believe a romance between a well-to-do Jewish retiree and a hard working black domestic could be for keeps.

K.C. is the daughter of a famous black-listed writer from the McCarthy era. She’s had one major novel and never another. Her friend and helpmate, Jewel, also boasts a stunning first novel, but she’s long since buried her literary ambition, The tragic epitaph of Zora Neale Hurston hovers over her. Unexpected literary success tests their once solid relationship and shifts everything in their lives.
